- Reviews:
- "[O]ne of the best historical reference books ever written." (Purcell, Who Was Who in the American Revolution)
- Editor comments:
- A classic, written by an American officer with unvarnished biases (particularly against meddling civilian officials and bumbling amateur soldiers). Outdated in some areas but still worth a look on military topics. —K.M.
- Decent book, but some multi-volume histories on the ARW have more content. BradMajors (talk) 20:32, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- Reviews:
- Fremont-Barnes, Gregory and Richard Alan Ryerson, eds. The Encyclopedia of the American Revolutionary War: A Political, Social, and Military History. 5 volumes. Santa Barbara, California: ABC-CLIO, 2006. ISBN 1-85109-408-3.

- Content:
- A revised and expanded version of Boatner's Encyclopedia.
- Editor comments:
- This edition leaves out Boatner's parenthetical citations, so for serious research you'll still need to consult the original to track down the sources. —K.M.

[edit] Biographical dictionaries
When writing biography, be sure to check the premier scholarly biographical dictionaries: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (British), Dictionary of Canadian Biography, and American National Biography. Entries are usually written by experts familiar with the primary sources, so these works are essentially secondary sources rather than tertiary sources (like most encyclopedias).
- Dictionary of American Biography. New York: Scribner's, 1928–64. 11 volumes.
- Editor comments:
- Superseded by the American National Biography, although some obscure persons are covered in this collection but not in the new one. —K.M.
- Editor comments:
- Dictionary of Canadian Biography. 15 volumes to date. University of Toronto Press, 1966–. Online version.
- Editor comments:
- One of the best free online sources. If your subject has a Canadian connection, check here. Some obscure persons are covered here and practically nowhere else. —K.M.
- Editor comments:
- Garraty, John A. and Mark C. Carnes, eds. American National Biography. 26 vols to date. New York: Oxford University Press, 1999. ISBN 0195206355.
- Editor comments:
- If you're writing biography on someone who lived in North America during the war, check here first. Available online via subscription; print and online versions available in larger libraries in the US.
- Editor comments:
- Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 2004–. 60 volumes to date. Available online in some large libraries.
- Purcell, L. Edward. Who Was Who in the American Revolution. New York: Facts on File, 1993. ISBN 0-8160-2107-4.
- Editor comments:
- A tertiary source, draws especially from Boatner's Encyclopedia and the Dictionary of American Biography. Good for writing brief biographies on obscure persons if you don't have more detailed sources. Not to be confused with Who Was Who During the American Revolution (1976), which is much more limited. —K.M.

- Reviews:
- "This is the authority on military records, and it may be contradicted only on very firm evidence to the contrary." (Purcell, Who Was Who in the American Revolution)

- Reviews:
- Gives a very high level overview of the British Army in the ARW. Some, but very limited information on individual units. Better resources can be found elsewhere.

- Lists all the regiments under British command that served in the American Revolutionary War. Includes for each regiment its service record and commanders and does a pretty good job. This books is like the 'Wright' book but for British units.
