If you want to run a bot on the English Wikipedia, you must first get it approved. To do so, follow the instructions below to add a request. If you are not familiar with programming it may be a good idea to ask someone else to run a bot for you, rather than running your own.

[edit] Current requests for approval

[edit]

[edit] IrcamBot

taskscontribscountSULlogspage movesblock userblock logrights logflag

Operator: LeMiklos

Automatic or Manually assisted: Automatic (supervised)

Programming language(s): PHP, w/ BasicBot framework

Source code available: soon on the bot's userpage

Function overview: adding templates on pages of contemporary classical music composers, linking to bios and music contents on several databases held by Ircam, French Research Institute in acoustics and music.

Edit period(s): once every few months.

Estimated number of pages affected: Between 200 and 800.

Exclusion compliant (Y/N): N

Already has a bot flag (Y/N): N

Function details: Harvests links (composers' pages) from category pages (only few of them, we manually decide which) and compares them to the list of resources on our databases (mainly Brahms and ContemporaryMusic). When needed, it adds a template (Template:ContemporaryMusicOnline, which is to be a little modified) to the External Links section - in the appropriate subsection (Listening, Recordings, etc.) if it exists. If the section does not exist, it is created.

Not exclusion-compliant : don't think it's a necessary feature, but I can implement it if needed. This is professional work from Ircam, guaranteed. I started adding templates (Template:ContemporaryMusicOnline) one by one, but we've got several hundreds of them. It's the kind of task that suits perfectly to a very simple bot. It has already been tested on our internal wiki.

[edit]

[edit] Botryoidal

taskscontribscountSULlogspage movesblock userblock logrights logflag

Operator: William Allen Simpson

Automatic or Manually assisted: supervised

Programming language(s): Python Wikipediabot Framework

Function overview: CfD, TfD, orphaning, fixing templates that include categories

Edit period(s): infrequently

Estimated number of pages affected: 2,000+ over the next few days

Already has a bot flag (Y/N): N

Function details: It's been several years since I've run this old bot. The approval process is more involved now. Much the same task as before: maintenance functions that require individualized replace functions.

As an example, over the next few days, I'm planning on removing the nocat parameter from {{Surname}} (as I've been doing by hand on complicated names for several days), but have a long simple series that could better be done with the standard replace.py function.

Presumably I don't have to ask approval for every new edit. The bot is already listed as approved (but inactive), so I'm trying out the process again.

[edit] Discussion

  • Why are you removing the nocat parameter from {{Surname}}? – Quadell (talk) 16:52, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SDPatrolBot 2

taskscontribscountSULlogspage movesblock userblock logrights logflag

Operator: Kingpin13

Automatic or Manually assisted: Automatic

Programming language(s): C# .NET, using DotNetWikiBot

Function overview: Added to the current tasks. It will notify users that a prod which they added to a page has been removed.

Edit period(s): Continuous, but at irregular periods

Estimated number of pages affected: unknown, will be a variable. Probably small.

Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Y

Function details: If a page has a prod removed from it. The prod remover has not edited the prodder's talk page recently, the article is not nominated for any kind of deletion, the prodder has not edited the article since the prod was removed, the prodder didn't remove the prod themselves, and there has been a reasonable amount of time since the prod being removed. SDPatrol bot will edit the prodder's talk page, notifying them of the prod removal. This will either be opt-out or -in.

[edit] Discussion

Per an idea I had a while ago, and fuelled by Excirial having the exact same idea. If anybody can think of more catches then the ones above, that would be welcome. I also need to come to a decision on if this will be opt-out or -in. I' leaning towards opt-out - Kingpin13 (talk) 21:44, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

For stuff that notifies like this I'd will have to be opt-in. People get rather testy on enwp about spambots. Q T C 22:53, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

Okay, opt-in than. - Kingpin13 (talk) 07:35, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Although if there's any chance of it being opt-out, that's what I would prefer. I personally don't see th problem with getting one notice, and then having the choice to not get any after that. I'm not sure how many people would even know about it to opt-in - Kingpin13 (talk) 07:17, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

A user has requested the attention of a member of the Bot Approvals Group. Once assistance has been rendered, please remove this tag. Any other input for this request? :D - Kingpin13 (talk) 13:44, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Approved requests

Bots that have been approved for operations after a successful BRFA will be listed here for informational purposes. No other approval action is required for these bots. Recently approved requests can be found here (edit), while old requests can be found in the archives.

</noinclude>

[edit] Denied requests

Bots that have been denied for operations will be listed here for informational purposes for at least 7 days before being archived. No other action is required for these bots. Older requests can be found in the Archive.

[edit] Expired/withdrawn requests

These requests have either expired, as information required by the operator was not provided, or been withdrawn. These tasks are not authorized to run, but such lack of authorization does not necessarily follow from a finding as to merit. A bot that, having been approved for testing, was not tested by an editor, or one for which the results of testing were not posted, for example, would appear here. Bot requests should not be placed here if there is an active discussion ongoing above. Operators whose requests have expired may reactivate their requests at anytime. The following list shows recent requests (if any) that have expired, listed here for informational purposes for at least 7 days before being archived. Older requests can be found in the respective archives: Expired, Withdrawn.
