Not exactly sure which fish is being described here. The hakes I know of up in the Cape Cod region are not really coastal fishes, and not particularly sought after recreationally. I'll include part of the former information for the sake of "history" but will describe those hakes that are found in the Atlantic on the east coast of the US. Rgamble

I haven't confirmed this, but according to http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/20060105/sc_space/fivedeepseafishonbrinkofextinction

the blue hake, along with other deep sea fishes, has quickly become endangered.
