Saarang is the annual cultural festival (culfest) of IIT Madras, Chennai. One of the biggest culfests in India, it is a five day festival, usually held in the fourth week of January in the plush and green IIT Madras campus. The festival is host to a footfall of about fifty thousand students from various parts of the country and from abroad. Conceived over thirty years ago as Mardi Gras, the IIT Madras culfest has come a long way in terms of participation, organization and the repertoire of events. Students have the opportunity of showcasing their talent in a variety of events ranging from literary events such as speaking events, quizzes and word games to cultural events like dance, music, theater and fine arts. Saarang also hosts professional shows (proshows) with professional artists performing classical, light, rock, jazz and other genres of music in the wide, well-decorated and well-equipped stage of the Open Air Theater (OAT) in the campus. Workshops organized by seasoned artists and professionals in fields like dance, music, fashion, arts etc. also form an integral part of this multi-faceted festival.

[edit] History
Being an engineering and technological institute, a cultural festival is instrumental in exposing the students of IIT Madras to the other creative aspects of student life. IIT Madras has long recognized this fact, and has been hosting an annual cultural festival for the past thirty years. Initially called Mardi Gras, the focus of the festival was to promote interest in cultural and literary activities and to develop the organizing skills of the students. From the very beginning, Mardi Gras was a well-known and looked forward to event in every student’s calendar, and had its share of memorable moments, for instance the Uriah Heep concert.
[edit] Golden Jubilee Edition
With 2009 marking the Golden Jubilee of IIT Madras, Saarang ’09 is set to reach dizzying heights what with 50,000 people, 50 events, and 5 professional shows to boast of in its special Golden Edition avatar. [edit] Tradition
Year after year, Saarang is scheduled in the fourth week of January as a five day festival, and has traditionally included the Republic Day as a part of the festival. Every year, Saarang kicks off with a somber and enchanting classical night, which is then followed by the Choreo night, the Light Music night and the rock concert in some order, all held at the magnificent OAT. On one of the evenings, semi-pro bands which have gone through one gritty round of qualification, fight it out with heart, soul and energetic music on the OAT stage. The light music group competition is also held on the OAT stage. The shows are all planned so as to keep the crowd occupied on all five evenings, and to sustain the vibrant mood of the festival.

The gigantic arena, the OAT is reserved for huge events like the proshows, the Choreo Nite and the group music finals. A.R.Rahman has performed as a kid in the huge OAT arena and drummer Sivamani has also been a part of Mardi Gras.
The definitive highlight of any Saarang edition is constituted by its Pro-Shows. This year’s acts have witnessed unprecedented hype and advance bookings. Here’s a quick glance at the billings:
[edit] Classical Nite (21st January) -Shobana’s Maya Ravana and Kanyakumari's 50 violin ensemble
In the wake of Chennai's sabhas after the Carnatic season, Saarang will make this one Classical Nite to remember. Padmashri Shobana Chandrakumar, famous exponent of Bharatanatyam who was a leading South Indian motion picture actress, has acted in over 200 movies in five languages. She won her first National Film Award for Best Actress in 1994, followed up with a second one in 2001 for her role in Mitr, My Friend.
Shobana's 'Maya Ravana' is the Ramayana presented from Ravana's perspective, without altering its main story. The clever choice of theme powerfully depicts the dramatic incidents following Sita's abduction, with episodes presented including Ravana's marriage to Mandodari, Rama's exile, Soorpanaka falling for Lakshman, the invasion of Lanka by Hanuman, Rama entering Lanka helped by the vaanar-sena and the subsequent war (this shown as a video projection) and the killing of Ravana. Watch out for Shobana's powerful facial abhinaya! English dialogues in the play include voice-overs by the likes of Naseerudhin Shah, Suhasini, Jackie Shroff and Revathi.
On a different ‘note’, Classical Nite has another special offering up its sleeve especially for the Saarang Golden Edition. Renowned violinist A. Kanyakumari along with her ensemble of fifty violinists will be performing live, in a unique stage presentation which sees young artistes from different guru paramparas performing on the same platform.
Kanyakumari has commendably trained each violinist to play in unison with all the others, thus making the grand enterprise sound like a single violin, proving that music is universal and does not have dimensions or limitations based on any particular style. The act has been performed on select occasions in hallowed places before, and the OAT makes for as grand a setting as one could ask for during IIT Madras' Golden Jubilee. Connoisseurs are bound to be counting down to the ragamalika manodharma swaras played in 50 different ragas, with accompaniment from distinguished maestros on the mridangam, ghatam, morsing and tabla.
[edit] Choreo Nite (22nd January)
What's the event collegiates all over town wait for the whole year? The one night when every college that counts in the city, and more besides, dazzles and dares to rise to the challenge? A single occasion that brings together close to 10,000 pairs of eyes with the eager fire of youth flaming in them, the vying urge to glory setting mind and body to the task of not just winning, but winning with grace and elegance? When do messages about climate change take the same stage as pretty stories about boys and girls? Where do bouncy rubber tubes find something in common with strobe lights?
One phrase - Choreo Nite. One place - the OAT at Saarang. Every year we hit record-breaking levels of messages pouring in to vote for their favourite team. Of the hundreds who have worked their butt off and their hearts, giving all they've got to a performance that trumps all others, only about a score of them score. One might say there is only one winner - but it isn't just the winning choreo team that's left smiling and contented at the end of the evening, it's the thousands of people in the audience who are warmed and amazed by the heat of their intensity.
Hundreds of colleges vie for a chance to showcase choreographed dance performances at Saarang, and the select few that do make the cut mesmerize with their performances in the Open Air Theatre. Slated for 22nd January, this edition has seen increased participation from outside Chennai.
[edit] Popular Nite (23rd January) - Sonu Nigam
Popular Nite on the 23rd of January is set to see a 2 hour 20 min performance by Sonu Nigam. Sonu Nigam, recently-turned veteran, needs no introduction to any Indian audience. A playback singer with a global reputation, his songs have been the life and soul of countless Indian movies. Not only has he released numerous Indi-pop albums, but even has donned some roles to boast of.
With a dizzying pile of awards, expectations at Saarang will run high. Who can forget his ever-popular rendition of Kal Ho Na Ho? For sheer versatility and emotional range, his voice resounds unparalleled. Besides Hindi and Kannada, his line-up includes songs in Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi,Tamil, Telugu, English, Bhojpuri, Urdu, Nepali and Marathi. Look forward to some multi-lingual tricks at the OAT during Saarang 2009!
Of course, fans will be looking out for his recent playback hits, including songs from Yuvvraaj and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, where he sings a song paying tribute to actors like Raj Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor, Dev Anand and Rishi Kapoor. Over the years, Sonu has given concert performances in over two dozen major countries. A year ago, he became the first Indian singer to perform in Germany. Fans of Mohammad Rafi will be keeping fingers crossed for samples of his July 2008 UK tour, where he sang Rafi's most famous songs at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Its our pleasure to host him at the Saarang Golden Edition.
[edit] Tarang/Decibels Finals and DJ Rekha (24th January)
Perhaps the most anticipated and celebrated music competitions, and easily the most famous ones across colleges nationwide, unfold at Saarang. Acoustyx, Powerchord, and of course, the Decibels and LM finals (Tarang) that are traditionally held at the OAT itself, that mecca of all amateur and semi-pro bands.
This evening at Saarang has seen some spontaneous contests, liberated music and performances that have left the audience enthralled. It has birthed legends of the stature of Rahman, and given upcoming acts the impetus needed at critical junctures. It's a night when lives can be shaped, careers can be made and futures predicted. It's a night we look forward to, not expecting anything specific, because we know better. The gossamer stuff dreams are woven of, as they say, is after all shapeless.
The night kicks off with Tarang, the Light Music finals, where college bands with popular Indian musical tastes battle it out. Decibels, as the name itself suggests, is an event that calls for a performance brimming with energy. Meant to bring the best semi-professional bands to one platform, over the years, it has served as a launch pad for bands such as Slain, Junkyard Groove, Moksha and Pin Drop Violence, among others. This year, Decibels received a record-breaking 90 entries this year, of which 25 have been shortlisted – the final four are in for a treat as they get to perform at the finals at the Open Air Theatre, to be judged by Opeth.
And that’s not all, the night also sees critically acclaimed DJ Rekha in attendance. New York based DJ Rekha is known for blending Bhangra and Hip-Hop. Her mission has been to bring South Asian music to the US, and her first album, DJ Rekha Presents Basement Bhangra released in October 2007. Newsweek recognized her as one of the most influential South Asians in the US, and she has received accolades from The New York Times, CNN, The Fader, The Village Voice, and The Washington Post, among others.
[edit] The Rock Show (25th January) - Opeth
This year, Saarang raises the bar, with Opeth headlining at the Rock Show on the 25th of January in their first ever performance in India. The show will have Motherjane and Demonic Resurrection opening.
Opeth:
A Swedish heavy metal band founded in Stockholm, Opeth goes back to 1990. Rooted in Scandinavian death metal, this progressive band counts folk, blues rock and jazz among its influences. Their songs are usually lengthy, featuring acoustic guitar interludes and strong dynamic shifts. Vocals vary pleasingly from growling to clean. Not having toured much during their first four albums, Opeth's first world tour came on the heels of Blackwater Park (2001).
With nine studio albums, two live albums, two box sets, and two DVDs to their credit, Opeth has never before visited India. They will be showcasing the best of their dazzling array at the Saarang Golden Edition. Most international acts come to India after playing other global arenas at their peak of success. In contrast, Opeth's ninth studio album, Watershed, was released on June 3, 2008 and entered the Billboard 200 at number 23. They are fast movers from their first real hit on the charts in America with the 2003 release of Damnation (album seven).
Saarang – and all those who have attended its closing-day rock show over the years – has been witness to an incredible array of talent, all the way up to the unbelievable performance of Uriah Heep at one Mardi Gras edition. Even so, few would have thought it possible for even the best student-run cultural festival to bag the first-ever show of Opeth in India. Well, we’ve done it!
As a winning gTalk Status Message entry said - "Love Opeth? Live a Saarang!" Let the head-banging begin! Opeth will be the Saarang show-stopper when The Drapery Falls on the night of the 25th.
Motherjane:
Motherjane is a progressive rock band based in Cochin. The band was formed in 1996, and consists of Suraj (vocalist), Baiju (lead guitar), John (drums), Clyde (bass) and Deepu (rhythm guitar). Motherjane is the only Indian rock band to have their music played in American, Japanese and Mexican radio stations. Their first album, Insane Biography won Best Indian Rock Album in 2002. The song "Soul Corporations" was chosen for inclusion on a Japanese metal compilation album, Geki Teki Metal. The band released their second album, Maktub, on September 27, 2008. Daily News & Analysis rates Motherjane as one of the top 3 live acts in India.
Demonic Resurrection:
Demonic resurrection is a death metal band based in Mumbai. Formed in 2000, the current lineup includes The Demonstealer (Guitars/Vocals), Daniel Rego (Guitars), Husain (Bass), Mephisto (Keyboards) and Virendra Kaith (Drums).
