Loviisa (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈloviːsa]; Swedish: Lovisa) is a municipality and town of 7,402 inhabitants (31 March 2009)[2] on the Southern coast of Finland. About 38% of the population is Swedish-speaking.[3]
The municipality covers an area of 92.54 square kilometres (35.73 sq mi) of which 48.09 km2 (18.57 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 166.52 inhabitants per square kilometre (431.3 /sq mi).
Loviisa was founded in 1745, as a border fortress against Russia. Most of the fortifications have been preserved. It is named after Lovisa Ulrika, the Swedish Queen consort of Adolf Frederick of Sweden.
Loviisa is the site of one of Finland's two nuclear power stations, the other being at Olkiluoto. The Lovisa nuclear power plant consists of two VVER units, each of 488 MWe.
