Llywelyn

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  (Redirected from Llewelyn)
Jump to: navigation, search
Prince Llywelyn of Wales at his death in 1240, with his sons Gruffydd and Dafydd mourning. Llywelyn is spelt Léolin above his head in the French manuscript.

The Welsh name Llywelyn (Welsh pronunciation: [ɬəˈwɛlɪn], English: /luːˈɛlɪn/) most likely derives from Old British Lugubelenus, a compound word formed from the names of the Celtic gods Lug or Lugh and Belenus. It is sometimes spelt Llywellyn, Llewelyn, Lewellen or Llewellyn (the doubling of the second -l- is by analogy; the name is never pronounced *[ɬəˈwɛɬɪn]). Additional variations include Fluellen. The name may occasionally be rendered in French as Léolin.[1]
