The International Reading Association is an international professional organization that was created in 1956 to improve reading instruction, facilitate dialogue about research on reading, and encourage the habit of reading. The IRA headquarters is in Newark, DE, United States. IRA has approximately 90,000 members, and more than 1250 councils and affiliates, worldwide. The current president of the IRA is Barbara Walker from Oklahoma State University.

In addition to newsletters, books, and guides, the IRA publishes four professional journals:

  • The Reading Teacher—for those working with children to age 12
  • Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy—essential reading for teachers of older learners
  • Reading Research Quarterly—the leader in literacy research
  • Lectura y Vida—about literacy education in the Spanish-speaking world

IRA also offers dissertation awards in which researchers like Donna Alvermann and Nell K. Duke have been receipients.

Reading Online, an e-journal sponsored by IRA, contains hundreds of articles, but it is not searchable from IRA's website, www.reading.org. Instead, articles may be searched at readingonline.org.
