Hyphen-minus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

The hyphen-minus is the character at position 2DHEX in ASCII and standards that derive from it. It is used as a hyphen, a minus sign and a dash. This was a compromise that made sense in the early days of fixed-width typewriters and computer displays but is considered[by whom?] to be ugly in proper typesetting[citation needed]. Nonetheless its usage persists as it is easy to enter on keyboards, well known, and at the same place in all common character sets.

Most programming languages use the hyphen-minus, not the minus sign, for denoting subtraction and negative numbers.
