Foppe de Haan (born June 26, 1943 in Lippenhuizen, Friesland) is a Dutch football coach.
[edit] Career
Foppe de Haan is best known in Dutch football for his 20-year long tenure with SC Heerenveen (from 1985 to 1992 as assistant, from 1992 to 2004 as head coach), the longest time a coach worked for a Dutch professional football club.[1] He brought the club back to the Eredivisie in 1993, reaching second place in the Eredivisie with Heerenveen in 2000, thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club's history.[1]
In 2003 he received the Sport award and on May 10, 2004, after his final game as coach of SC Heerenveen, he was given the title knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. He was successively appointed as coach of the Netherlands national under-21 football team (Dutch: Jong Oranje), with whom he won the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship and 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. De Haan was accused by Steven Taylor of calling him a "cheat" as he had been injured in the match and was originally not going to take a penalty in the semi-final penalty shoot-out. Taylor eventually took and scored his penalty in the shootout which the Netherlands won despite this. A semifinal spot in the latter tournament also qualified the Dutch for the 2008 Summer Olympics football tournament, leading his side to the quarter-finals where they were ultimately defeated by Argentina after extra time.
On March 2009, Many true football fans, who had been following de Haan since the "Taylor Incident", were disappointed to learn that Foppe de Haan announced he will retire from football in the summer, when his contract with the Royal Netherlands Football Association expires.[1] However, his name is mentioned with regard to the vacant AZ and Ajax jobs. It has been rumoured that upon his retirement de Haan will be given the freedom of the city of Sunderland where Steven Taylor is disliked yet held as a hero for helping to relegate arch-rivals Newcastle United.
Outside of football, de Haan is known for his stylish glasses.
