The company was created in 1999 from Siemens Matsushita Components, which was a joint venture of Siemens AG and Matsushita in 1989. The stock opened on 15 October 1999 at the same time in Frankfurt and New York, with Siemens and Matsushita holding interests of 12.5% each. In 2006 Siemens sold its shares of Epcos. In October 2006 Matsushita also sold its holdings. TDK Corporation agreed to acquire a controlling stake in the company on 31 July 2008.[1]

Epcos is one the worldwide largest manufacturers of electronic components and systems. The company's portfolio includes capacitors, ceramic components, EMC filters, inductors, non-linear resistors, RF modules, surface acoustic wave components, surge arresters and ferrites.

In fiscal 2007 Epcos posted sales of €1.44 billion and a profit of €64 million. The breakdown of sales according to industries served in fiscal 2007 was: automotive electronics 29%, information and communications technology 22%, industry electronics 22%, consumer electronics 12%, and distribution 15%.

Epcos runs manufacturing and development facilities in Europe, North and South America, and Asia. The portion of workers in low-wage countries was approx. 70% in 2004. Further relocations of jobs and business activities were announced in 2004. In 2007, 56% of the company's 18,300 employees worked in Asia, 24% in Europe excluding Germany, 10% in Germany, and 10% in North and South America.

In Germany Epcos has production location in Heidenheim (capacitors, inductors and ferrites), Berlin (ceramic components), and Munich (SAW components). Worldwide Epcos operates production facilities in Brazil, Spain, India, Hungary, Austria (Deutschlandsberg), USA, Czech Republic, Malaysia, Singapore and China.
