Ejea de los Caballeros
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ejea de los Caballeros (Aragonese Exea, commonly known simply as Ejea) is a town and municipality in the province of Zaragoza, part of the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. It is one of the five main towns in the comarca de las Cinco Villas or "shire of the five villages". The eponymous five villages are Ejea itself, Tauste, Sadaba, Uncastillo and Sos del Rey Católico.
The town joined the medieval Kingdom of Aragon in the year 1105 after the Spanish Reconquista ended Muslim rule in the region. The town retains many medieval buildings, such as the Church of El Salvador. The main local fiesta honors the Virgin of the Olive, the local saint. Another local festival commemorates Vote Day, an event during the black plague, when the townsfolk voted for the bringing of the Virgin of the Olive across the town to worship her. The plague is purported to have ended that day in Ejea de los Caballeros.
As of 2007, the mayor of Ejea de los Caballeros is Javier Lambán, from the political party PSOE.
