David H. Shepard

David Hammond Shepard (September 30, 1923November 24, 2007) was a prolific American inventor, who invented amongst other things, the first optical character recognition device. He also invented the familiar Farrington B numeric font used on credit cards. [1]

Shepard was born in Milwaukee. His father died when he was 2 and his mother when he was 10. His guardian was Laurens Hammond who was famous for inventing the Hammond organ.[1]

Shepard died in San Diego of bronchiectasis on November 24, 2007, at the age of 84.[1]
