Area code 787, is one of the two local telephone area codes covering the entire island of Puerto Rico. The 787 area code, or (PUR) was created during a split from the original (809) area code. The split was done on or around March 1996. The 939 area code, was created as an overlay in 2001.
When in Puerto Rico, the full area code + seven digit phone number must be dialed. When calling to Puerto Rico from anywhere in the United States or Canada, dial 1 (787) + seven digit phone number.

Area code 939 for Puerto Rico, operates as an overlay for the original local (787) telephone area code. Most telephone numbers in Puerto Rico that feature this area code tend to be wireless phones.
As an overlay, the area code was added on or around the date September 2001. The 939 area code was created following 787's split from the legacy regional 809 area code.
